INSIDE OUR CLASSROOMS
They say don't judge a book by its cover, and the same is true of judging a school by the building. While New Emerson may be located within the walls of a 1930s-era building, it is nothing but a 21st century school inside. We are a 1:1 campus with Chromebooks for every teacher and learner. We use technology as one of our many tools for teaching and learning. Come check out our grade-level classrooms below. We have one classroom for each grade level with a maximum of 24 students per classroom. There is a full-time teaching assistant at the kindergarten level and a part-time teaching assistant in grades 1-5.
MS. SHANNON KOPPENHAFER
A TYPICAL DAY IN KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarteners spend all day with Ms. Shannon on our four-day week schedule. They also leave throughout the day to attend four specials/elective classes.
MEET MS. SHANNON
Shannon has been teaching kindergarten at New Emerson for 24 years. In fact, she was a student teacher in Ms. Terry Schmalz's classroom — before Terry took over as principal. Shannon is a fantastic teacher with tremendous talent, kindness, and never-ending love and patience for our youngest learners. She was chosen and honored as an outstanding educator by the D51 Foundation in 2018.

At the end of each writing unit, Ms. Molly's learners present their writing work to classmates and then they participate in a "Writing Share" event in the Libratory for all the parents.
YOGA WITH MOLLY & MABEL
Ms. Molly and one of her first-graders, Mabel, started yoga classes after school three years ago before Covid hit. We hope to get back to "Yoga with Molly and Mabel" one of these days!
MS. ALYSON PLATT

EARLY BIRD READING
Every morning parents are invited to come read with their children for the first 15 to 30 minutes of the school day. Bus riders can sit with other parents in the room or read with Ms. Alyson. There are books and reading adventures for everyone!
SECOND GRADE STEAM IN ACTION!
Ms. Alyson's class is not only advancing in reading, writing, math, and science — but there is also weekly STEAM in the Libratory. This second grader created a "balloon float" in the Macy's Day Parade using the green screen.

WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE!
This is your activity description. Describe the options available, along with important deadlines, requirements or time commitments necessary, so students understand what’s involved. Don’t forget a fun image or video!
Third graders participate in the local science fair for the first time as part of their science work in third grade.
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
New Emerson learners all participate in problem-based learning units throughout their years on campus. This year's third graders learned their science/erosion standards by coming up with solutions for erosion issues on the Western Slope.

TAKING LEARNING INTO THEIR OWN HANDS
In fifth grade, autonomy and independence are cornerstones to the learning process. A lot of the learning is accessed digitally and is organized at the individual student's pace . Personalized learning is what New Emerson is all about!
THERE IS NO "I" IN TEAM
At New Emerson, students work in teams ... A LOT. It's part of our culture. We want to prepare learners to work with people of all kind as they learn to build a better world together.
